Q: Which settings are used to generate data using MP3s, M4As or WAVs?

A: WAVs are generated from the digital masters of CDs or records to guarantee the best possible quality. MP3s and M4As are generated directly from these WAVs. MP3s are encoded using lame-V2 (version 3.96.1), allowing MP3s to be generated using VBR (Variable Bit Rate). The medium bit rate is around 180 KBs. We find this to be the best compromise between quality and capacity, with the emphasis on quality. For M4A, we encode using itunes (V6.01). The byte rate is 192 KBs.

A: Artist, album, high-definition album cover, genre, track titles, track numbbers, total track count of the album and year the album was released can be accessed from all tracks using MP3s as well as ID3V1 and ID3V2.

Q: What about other music formats (OGG, FLAC, WMA, etc.) or other encoding settings?
